Well, they say “ask and you shall receive” and that’s what I did. I’ve been wanting to get back to my roots and sing classically again. Well, that opportunity has finally fallen in my lap. I was at Fatso’s Sports Bar in San Antonio of all places and I noticed a large group of people with maroon shirts (my favorite color). On the front of these shirts read “South Texas Lyric Opera.” I was immediately intrigued. SO i walked over to the table and talked to one of the girls proudly wearing the shirt. I asked if she was a member of the group and she said yes and asked if I sang. I said I did and that I used to sing with Opera Colorado in Denver and later the Mastersingers in San Antonio. She said they were looking for singers to perform in Mendelssohn’s Elijah which is an oratorio. I was immediately excited and got her number. The rehearsal was tow days later and after obtaining my own musical score, I am proud to say I am learning my part well ready to perform in August. If that weren’t enough, I’m now taking voice lessons with the Maestro, Dr. Mazias de Oliveira! He has been singing opera for many years and has appear in countless performances in Brazil, the US, and Mexico. He says with some practice, I may get a role in the December production of Amal and the Night Visitors. I’m really excited. It’s good to be singing classical music again.

Voice-over for Lincoln Documentary

After posting my creative resume on Craig’s List, I was contacted by Fat Chance Flix to audition for a documentary, A Sobbing of the Strong. I read for the part of Anna Suratt. She was the daughter of Mary Surratt who was hung for her part in the Lincoln assassination conspiracy. Then I read a letter Mary Todd Lincoln wrote to Senator Sumner telling him how happy she was that the war was over. Another voice over artist was reading for these same parts and I didn’t think I had a chance.

A week later, I was delighted to get a phone call from David George asking me to read for the part of Mary Lincoln! I couldn’t believe that I was going to be Mary! David gave me a very large book of Mary’s letters and highlighted the ones I was to rehearse. I practiced and really tried to think about who Mary was and how she would have sounded. I came up with a mild British accent and David really liked it.

The plan is to have a documentary, a soundtrack and a mini-series. The project will end next year. This is the perfect year to kick it off since this is Mr. Lincoln’s 200th birthday on the 12th of February. It also has special meaning since we have our first black president who stood on the steps of Mr. Lincoln’s memorial just last month. What a great opportunity for me.

I met Aaron Tippin at the USAA Veteran’s Day Ceremony. He opened the ceremony with “Where the Stars and Stripes and the Eagle Fly” and had a cool guitar with stars and stripes to match! I work at USAA as a User Interface Analyst for our company’s intranet. USAA is a financial services company for the military and their families.

After he sang I got to sit next to him during the ceremony. The day before, we talked a little bit about Nashville and I told him that I recorded my album there in 1996 at Studio 19 and 20. He said that he didn’t think those studios existed anymore. What bummer! Anyway, so the day of the event, I gave him a copy of my CD when we were in the greenroom. He and his production manager said they would take a listen to it. I asked them to at least listen to the whole thing once before they threw it in the trash. They laughed and assured me that they wouldn’t throw it away. Well, not sure if anything will come of it, but it sure was cool to meet a country music star and give him my little CD.
